Why Does the Color of the Facade Matter?
Frost is not only challenging for us but also negatively affects our buildings. After winter, it's essential to inspect the facade and repair any damage. Even slight frost can cause water that has penetrated the plaster to freeze, leading to cracks and delamination.
What Are the Negative Effects of Subzero Temperatures on a Building?
Material Shrinkage
In low temperatures, construction materials, especially metal and concrete, can shrink. This contraction may lead to the formation of gaps or cracks in the facade.
Freezing and Thawing
In conditions where temperatures frequently hover around freezing, water within the micropores of facade materials can freeze and thaw repeatedly. This process may result in the development of cracks in the material's structure.
The color of the facade matters. Dark shades of plaster tend to heat up significantly, reaching temperatures as high as 75–80°C in sunlight. Rapid temperature drops at night (particularly during extremely cold winter conditions) cause abrupt tension and contraction in the material. This phenomenon leads to the formation of micro-cracks and fissures on the plaster's surface, which ultimately degrade the wall's structure.
Moisture Condensation
In low temperatures, moisture may condense on the facade's surface, leading to condensation. This creates favorable conditions for the growth of mold and moss.
Paint Layer Damage
Subzero temperatures also impact paint surfaces, which undergo freezing and thawing processes. Paints and coatings may become brittle and fragile in cold conditions, leading to peeling, cracking, or flaking.
Organic Material Degradation
Organic materials, such as wood or wood-based composites, are susceptible to freezing and can degrade under the influence of frost.
Exposure to De-Icing Chemicals
The facade may come into contact with salt or other de-icing substances, which can accelerate the corrosion or degradation of materials.
The Impact of Facade Color on the Effects of Low Temperatures
Black facades have gained popularity in recent years. However, not all investors are aware that creating a dark-colored facade using ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite System) technology requires the use of high-quality products. This includes not only plasters, paints, and adhesives but also appropriate thermal insulation.
For dark facades, there is a significant risk of excessive thermal stress. Dark colors tend to absorb more heat, which can lead to cracks and fissures forming on the plaster's surface, ultimately resulting in the gradual degradation of the building envelope. Additionally, the color of the facade may lose its intensity over time.
