Deep-Penetrating Primer for Damp and Salt-Contaminated Substrates, Hardener for Sealing Slurries
Suitable for use as a primer for Bikuthan 2K, Deuxan 2K, NB Elastik, and NB 1.
KOESTER Polysil TG 500
KOESTER Polysil TG 500 is a polymer-silicate-based primer. On salt-contaminated and damp substrates, it reduces pore volume, thereby minimizing the risk of salt efflorescence, while still allowing water vapor diffusion and wall drying. The product penetrates deeply into the substrate (up to 2 cm, depending on substrate properties), providing strengthening and hydrophobic effects. It is suitable for use on mineral substrates such as mortars, plasters, cement-based sealing slurries, as well as concrete surfaces. Polysil TG 500 is used as a primer for waterproof coatings. The product is certified by ITB as a component of the KOESTER NB 1 Plus Mineral Concrete Protection System (Technical Approval No. AT-15-8233/2015) and holds a Hygiene Certificate PZH No. HK/B/1399/02/2015.
Application:
KOESTER Polysil® TG 500 is used for strengthening and protecting mineral substrates and reducing substrate absorption, including high-absorption materials like sandstone. The product has hydrophobic properties and reduces the risk of salt efflorescence reoccurrence. KOESTER Polysil® TG 500 also increases frost resistance in mineral substrates and is used for hardening sealing slurries. It is suitable for all mineral substrates, except gypsum-based ones. Polysil® TG 500 can also be used as a primer for bituminous waterproofing compounds (e.g., Deuxan® 2K, Bikuthan® 2K) and mineral waterproofing coatings (e.g., NB Elastik, KOESTER NB 1).
Consumption:
- Approx. 0.13-0.25 kg/m², depending on substrate properties
- As a deep-penetrating primer: approx. 100-130 g/m² (for highly absorbent substrates, consumption may double)
- For hardening slurries: approx. 200-250 g/m²
- As a primer for bituminous waterproofing and renovation plasters: approx. 150 g/m² (for highly absorbent substrates, consumption may double)
What is Waterproofing?
Waterproofing, also known as moisture protection, is the process of securing a structure against the harmful effects of water. Waterproofing products are classified based on their binders:
-
- Bitumen and tar-based (an older method being phased out): These offer high water resistance and accessibility but lack effective interlayer adhesion and pose health risks.
- Synthetic resin-based (modern products): Effective mainly for indoor or residential use but not suitable for large water tanks, as prolonged exposure to water may reduce their effectiveness.
- Mineral-polymer waterproofing compounds: These products, also known as sealing or insulating slurries, are free from the drawbacks of other types and are ideal for waterproofing walls, plinths, water basins, pools, balconies, terraces, roofs, and high-humidity rooms.
- Multi-component reactive resin-based (the latest binders): These include polyurethane and epoxy resins, providing excellent substrate penetration, high adhesion, and complete waterproofing
