Foundation Waterproofing – What Are the Most Common Mistakes?
March 2, 2022Liquid Waterproofing Membrane
Liquid waterproofing membrane is a specialized sealant designed to protect walls and floors under tiles from non-pressurized water exposure in residential homes and apartments. This waterproof layer consists of synthetic resins, fillers, and modifying agents. It has a thick paint-like consistency, making it easy to apply.
This under-tile waterproofing solution can be applied to various surfaces, including:
- Concrete
- Plastered or gypsum-based substrates
- Chipboard
- Ceramic hollow bricks
Where Should Liquid Waterproofing Be Applied?
Liquid membrane should be applied only in areas prone to water exposure and moisture retention—not the entire room. It is typically used in key zones, such as:
- Entire floor surface
- Shower cabin and bathtub areas
- Around washbasins
- Other high-moisture zones
The drying time of liquid waterproofing membrane ranges between 3-6 hours per layer.
Tile installation can only be carried out 24 hours after the second layer has fully dried to ensure proper adhesion and long-lasting waterproof protection.

Key Features of Liquid Waterproofing Membrane
- Highly flexible – Due to its synthetic resin composition, the membrane is extremely elastic.
- Provides effective protection – Ideal for bathrooms and other wet areas.
- Space-saving – Forms a thin protective layer of about 1-2 mm, unlike traditional waterproofing materials.
- Versatile application – Can be applied to concrete, ceramic hollow bricks, plastered or gypsum-based substrates.
- Targeted application – Only used in critical areas, not the entire room.
- Quick-drying – Each layer dries in 3-6 hours.
- Two-layer system – Only two layers are required for full protection.
- Sealing tape required – At wall and floor junctions, a sealing tape must be embedded into the first layer to absorb structural movements.
- Tile installation timing – Tiles can be applied 24 hours after the second layer is fully dry.
Additional Materials Needed for Waterproofing
- Primer – For absorbent substrates.
- Sealing tape – Ensures structural flexibility at wall and floor junctions.
- Internal & external sealing corners – For additional reinforcement.
- Brush or roller – For easy membrane application.
