What is HYDROSTOP?
July 1, 2022ABC of General Conditions Required for the Substrate
When planning to build a house, it is essential to understand the requirements that the substrate must meet, particularly to ensure the correct technical installation of waterproofing.
This is not the first thing that comes to mind when preparing for construction, but poorly prepared substrate is one of the most common reasons why waterproofing fails.
Requirements for the Substrate:
-
Dimensional Tolerances of the Substrate
a) Newly constructed walls/structures must meet the dimensional tolerances permitted by ITB (Building Research Institute).
b) Existing walls/structures do not have to comply with dimensional tolerance requirements.
c) Tank-type waterproofing: The sealing layer is applied directly to the structural element.
d) Ground-level floors: The substrate should be prepared to meet the required dimensional standards (ITB, DIN 18202, or Merkblatt “Tolerances in Building Construction”). -
The substrate is usually moist or even wet – most modern waterproofing materials tolerate a matte-damp surface (without standing water).
-
A highly water-saturated substrate can be pre-sealed using mineral sealing slurries.
-
The substrate must be stable and load-bearing, free from cracks.
-
Exposed or excavated elements must be thoroughly cleaned and inspected – remove loose masonry fragments, crumbling mortar, and any material affecting adhesion. Strongly salt-contaminated walls should be mechanically cleaned, and desalination treatments should be considered.
-
Gravel nests, cavities, and voids must be filled with system-compatible repair mortars.
-
External foundation edges should be rounded or milled. Internal corners should have a cove (fillet) made with system-specific mortar.
-
A pressure distribution layer should be applied on horizontal surfaces sealed with bituminous materials.
-
Coating-based waterproofing must be applied directly to the structural elements of the building.
-
Seal point and linear water inflows before applying waterproofing coatings.
