Finishing Coat
A finishing coat is a top smoothing layer applied to plaster surfaces. It is used on vertical surfaces, both indoors and outdoors.
This layer consists of gypsum, lime, or cement, serving as a leveling surface typically applied in a 2-3 mm thickness.
When properly applied, the finishing coat facilitates interior or facade finishing and enhances the overall aesthetic quality.
Finishing Coat vs. Screed – Key Differences
The finishing coat is often mistaken for screed, which is a cement leveling layer.
- Screed is used to level floors, both indoors and outdoors (e.g., balconies and terraces).
- It forms the top structural layer, ensuring a flat and stable base for flooring.
- A well-made screed guarantees even flooring levels and long-lasting durability.
- Screed is essential for leveling floors before installing tiles, parquet, panels, wooden planks, carpets, or mosaics.
- It is applied in a thick layer, using cement-based or anhydrite mortar.
Screed is usually pre-mixed in bags, but it can also be prepared with aggregates or delivered as a ready-mix from concrete plants or screed manufacturers (e.g., anhydrite screeds).
