What Happens If Soil Test Results Are Poorly Analyzed?
Misinterpreting soil test results can lead to serious consequences. Primarily, if you have an incorrect view of how soil layers are distributed and the type of water or environmental threats you are dealing with, you might choose the wrong methods for the building's foundation and its waterproofing. The illustration shows a traditional way of foundation placement: footings, foundation beams, and light damp-proof insulation. This method is appropriate provided that the surrounding soil is permeable, the groundwater level is below the foundation level, and there are no aggressive environmental threats.
However, if the soil test results were incorrectly analyzed and water could occasionally reach the foundation level, heavy-duty insulation must be applied. At this point, even if everything seems right, it's actually wrong. Remember, poorly chosen or designed waterproofing, once installed, can only be repaired, not easily replaced. How to fix it?
Here we see a traditional method of foundation placement, involving heavy, coating-based waterproofing. It is incredibly complex, as you can see from the number of overlaps and individual layers. This method is practically impossible to implement on a construction site by crews that typically build single-family homes. Sometimes, instead of this traditional foundation method, it might be simpler to use the slab-on-grade foundation shown in the slide, which involves a reinforced concrete slab.
